Your photo of Digger on the flower is sooo pretty!! It's a shame we don't have a photo contest because that would be a winner! Could I used it on the front page of the site??

Sure.

I read your latest blog entry. From memory, marigolds around a garden should repel rabbits from a garden, maybe it depends on the species of the merigolds?
The yellow canary, could this possible be a Gold Finch? I have plenty of these here at my home, but then again I also have a sock filled with thistle seed for them:

Sorry, seems the links didn't work with the html coding I used. cry

Here's the beetles:

beetles

and one for the gold finch:

WhizKidsMom posts: 28 3 stars user offline United States
Marie,
Yep those are the beetles I am fighting. Dumping them in a container of soapy water does the trick. Doing it early in the morning when they are groggy makes it easy to pluck them.
Those bug bags actually attract more and they stop to feed before going to the bag.

And yes - gold finches they are ! They feed off my Black Beauty Rudbeckia.

The marigolds are suppose to ward off bad bugs and animals - but the rabbit just seems to like those blooms. They like to eat my pansies and petunias as well.

ladybug15057 posts: 75 5 stars user online United States
EEEKS! Sounds like you have your hands full and certainly a never ending battle! I went and did a search again to see if I could find about the black birds and bluejays eating them and I did find it. Thing being, the links are going to probably through this whole post off because of how long they are. (so chances are after I know you had a chance to read this I will delete the links... since I cannot seem to use a html code to make embedded links here. confused
But as they say, learn something new everyday. I was not aware that the pest-y destructive grubs in the lawn in reality are Japanese beetles in the young stage. But seems there is a false Japanese beetle too? confused
And seems your soap and water are about as friendly as one can get for destroying them, but not to the 'root' of the problem? Then again, even though I found a link to an organic treatment for the lawn, well this wouldn't be hermie friendly either if one wanted to feed them things from outside. *sigh*

Here's the long links...

birds

"Perhaps birds such as blackbirds and jays are just becoming aware that Japanese beetles – a relatively newcomer to the area – are good to eat, Kurt Meyer, of Meyer Landscape & Design, Moline, says."

and at this longer link, go to the second picture on the top row (the direct link is even longer if I try to place it here)

At the end of the reply box, it says:

Use http://www.foo.com or description for links.
HTML tags are not allowed inside posts.

So gonna try it to see if maybe that will shorten one of the links, gonna try it with the organic method link:

organic

Edited to add...
YIPPPPPEEEE!!! I figured out how to do embedded links within the actual forums now... thanks to the little note at the end of the reply box, but took awhile for it to sink in... redface

Marie,

I use Milky Spore in my grass. When we first moved here, the grubs were bad. Now we rarely find them now (we have stepping stone in the grass, when lifted, we find the grubs). So these beetles are coming from other yards. I catch them before they do damage to the garden and lay eggs.

Milky Spore is not harmful to beneficial insects, birds, bees, pets or man. It is a bacteria that only kills the grubs.

Neem Oil is a good control for aphids and white flies. Where I spray the oil, I do not use that plant's blooms for my hermies. Last year I had a really bad case of aphids. I bought lady bugs and they took care of the aphids. And the Milky spore takes a good two years to take affect - so this year is it. They just love my white roses.

ladybug15057 posts: 75 5 stars user online United States
Personally I do not like to use any forms of poisons, but if this milky spore works it is worth it... gonna have to look into this, never heard of it. But our front yard is starting to take a beating. cry
And well... sorry Whizkidsmom... my first thoughts were "You BUY ladybugs?????" Around here we can't get rid of them!! When we got our first computer in 2001, I was at lost for a user name... ever wonder where ladybug came from? I use to have plain ladybug, but through a crash of Windows Me, Yahoo never let me have it back again... so I added the 15057. But honestly around here we sort of dread fall coming due to how we get swarmed with ladybugs in our home... gets so bad we get the vacuum out and suck our master bedroom down. It's nothing to have a fresh batch here nightly of about 75-100 of them. And don't let anybody kid ya... they do bite/pinch!!

WhizKidsMom posts: 28 3 stars user offline United States
Yeah - There was no place to catch them around here. Now I do have a lot of bees. Mason Bees and Bubble Bees. They love my garden.
And worms. In fact, I have a worm farm in my basement. They not only work in my compost bins, but they are also food for my turtles.

I really don't like poisons, either. Rather than spraying my tomato plants, I plant marigolds and Bee Balm between them. No bugs on my tomato plants. mrgreen Just rabbits eating some marigold blooms and grass. They haven't had a taste for my petunias - yet. rolleyes

We had a gopher in our front yard. All we saw was the hole in the grass. What I found from my search was that ammonia will make them stay away. Guess what is the natural ammonia?

ladybug15057 posts: 75 5 stars user online United States
ok...got my attention here because I have no idea. I am about to go buy some ammonia for the dang ground hog we have that is tearing up under my husbands metal shed I bought him last year. This darn thing has the whole back yard, as well as all the woods behind us and he is tearing out the underneath of my husbands shed that is down here not even 5 feet from our back porch. (he needed to clean out the garage and needs to keep somethings handy instead of up in the back yard where our 10' by 12' barn/shed is)I've researched and researched and minus shooting it, setting off gas canisters, they suggest ammonia. eekBut he has GOT to go...
And I have tried searching how to repel ladybugs too, but no luck except to seal ones home. I don't think we can get this thing any more air tight safely... and we have NO idea how they are getting in. My neighbors are at wits ends too.

WhizKidsMom posts: 28 3 stars user offline United States
Natural ammonia is human urine. surprised Yep. It soaks in the ground and does not smell to us. But the animals hate it.

I don't know what to suggest for the ladybugs as they are the good guys. They probably follow you in the house. Or you have a nest in the house.

Ants is another problem. They keep wanting to come in.

ladybug15057 posts: 75 5 stars user online United States
I know ladybugs are suppose to be the good bugs...and when we first moved here all I kept saying was "But they bring good luck". Well... so much for that when you are in bed at night and they start crawling on you and pinch/bite every so often. Or you pull the covers back and you got a couple parading across the bed looking at you like "Who do you think you are?" Or they are crawling across the cathedral ceiling in the bedroom, and start to fly about.. madMy daughter years ago tried catching them and putting them back outside. That lasted about a week when she got totally disgusted cause of how many there were each night.
I knew human urine was a natural ammonia, our son who was stationed in Georgia use to... well 'whiz' his yard in the areas he found fire ants at. Just... well... I don't see me or my hubby whizzing under the shed or around it. redface Thanks any way. biggrin

Square Brackets
Use [[foo] to show [foo].

~tc~ Tiki Comment ~/tc~ makes a Tiki comment. It will be completely removed from the display, but saved in the file for future reference. ~hc~ HTML Comment ~/hc~ makes an HTML comment. It will be inserted as a comment in the output HTML; these are not normally displayed in browsers, but can be seen using "View Source" or similar.
